Overview

The Federal Skilled Trades Program requires at least 2 years of full-time trade experience, or the part-time equivalent of about 3,900 hours, within the last 5 years, in an eligible TEER 2 or 3 trade occupation. Its language requirement is lower than the Federal Skilled Worker Program, generally CLB 5 for speaking and listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing, which makes it accessible to strong tradespeople who have not scored as highly on other programs.

A dedicated trades category draw also runs within Express Entry, alongside FSTP itself and provincial trades streams, so most tradespeople have more than one live route into the pool at any given time.

Where trade certification fits in

Some trades are regulated at the provincial level and require a recognized trade certificate or a qualifying offer of employment to be admissible. We confirm whether your trade is regulated in your target province and, where needed, help you plan a certification or credential assessment alongside your application.

  • Trade NOC matching and program-eligibility confirmation across FSTP, category draws and PNPs

Frequently Asked

Questions about Skilled Trades Pathway

Do I need a job offer for FSTP?+

A qualifying job offer or provincial trade certificate can be required depending on your specific route; we confirm which applies to your trade and profile.

Is the trades category draw better than applying under FSTP alone?+

It can clear at a different CRS threshold than general draws, so we track both routes and apply through whichever gives you the fastest realistic outcome.

My trade isn’t regulated, does that change anything?+

It usually simplifies your file, since you won’t need a separate provincial certification step before applying.
