Germany: the Opportunity Card and the EU Blue Card
The Opportunity Card lets qualified candidates search for work in Germany for up to a year without a job offer, while the EU Blue Card is the main route once you have one.
Overview
The Opportunity Card, known as the Chancenkarte, is a points-based visa that lets qualified candidates enter Germany to search for work, for up to 12 months, without needing a job offer first. It requires proof of self-sufficient funds, around €1,091 per month for 2026, and allows part-time work of up to 20 hours a week while you search.
The EU Blue Card is Germany’s main route once you have a qualifying job offer, with a 2026 minimum gross salary of €50,700 generally, or a lower €45,934 threshold for shortage occupations and recent graduates.
