United Kingdom: Skilled Worker and Global Talent routes

Most professionals enter through an employer-sponsored Skilled Worker visa, while independent high achievers in science, technology, arts and academia can apply through the unsponsored Global Talent route instead.

Overview

The Skilled Worker visa is the UK’s main employer-sponsored route: you need a confirmed job offer from a licensed sponsor, in an eligible occupation, meeting the current salary threshold, which was raised again for 2026. The Global Talent visa runs on an entirely different logic: it doesn’t require a job offer at all, and instead assesses whether you are a recognized leader, or a potential future leader, in fields including science, engineering, technology, humanities, medicine, and the arts.

Most work-route visa holders can apply for settlement, known as Indefinite Leave to Remain, after 5 years of continuous residence, with British citizenship generally available a year after that.

Typically after 5 years of continuous residence on a qualifying route, though Global Talent can allow this sooner in some cases.
